The world of fly fishing staged its very own Commonwealth Games starting on Thursday
June 24, with Talyllyn Lake, near Tywyn, providing a spectacular setting for key
parts of the competition.
"This tournament is one of the highlights of fly fishing competition worldwide and
it is great that it is taking place here in Wales and at such prestigious locations,"
said Phil Wood, Head Ghillie at the Ty'n y Cornel hotel which sits on the side of
the 222-acre Talyllyn Lake.
Top Welsh angler Moc Morgan agreed and added: "Nowhere is the Commonwealth ideal
better expressed than when anglers come together in friendly rivalry. "That wonderful
camaraderie will be matched by the quality and hospitality of Wales within the beautiful
and scenic surroundings of the mid Wales countryside.
"The Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships will surely provide an event all participants
will enjoy and always remember - win or lose. "I believe that one of the earliest
Commonwealth Championships was actually fished in Wales. It was in 1990, the year
after the World Fly Fishing was held in the Wrexham area of North Wales.
"Immediately after the World Championship, the Commonwealth Championship was held
on Llyn Brenig, both events having been organised by the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling
Association (WSTAA). "This year, working in tandem with the Angling Associations
of Rhayader, Builth Wells, Clewedog and Talyllyn, the WSTAA has created a challenge
and a setting that the leading world fly fishermen will thoroughly enjoy.
"As for the Social Programme, what can be said other than this is the "Land of Song".
"The Commonwealth Championship will bring together friends old and new, sharing a
common understanding and reaffirming once again that old adage 'there's more to fishing
than catching fish'."
Mr Wood said: "As Head Ghillie here are Ty'n y Cornel I am delighted that part of
the competition is taking place at Talyllyn on one of the finest brown trout and
sewin fisheries in Wales. "Talyllyn, sitting just below magnificent Cader Idris mountain
is one of the great fishing locations in Wales. "I am sure all our Commonwealth visitors
will appreciate the magnificent setting and the challenges that Talyllyn provides
for the competitive angler."
